Weather Risk

Weather warning alerts are necessary if severe weather risks are identified so people in the affected area know to take precautions to stay as safe as possible.  Unfortunately though the weather risks cannot always be predicted in time and these are the occasions that weather events cause the most damage.

Identifiable weather risks where raising an alarm is justified include:

  • Flooding
  • Hurricane, cyclone or severe gales
  • Heat waves
  • Heavy snow and blizzards
  • Risk of ice
  • Thunderstorms and lightning
  • Dense fog

On identifying a potential weather risk meteorologists can prepare a warning and advice on how to cope, especially in disastrous conditions such as flooding or when a hurricane is due. Weather risk alerts will usually be broadcast on the TV, radio and over the Internet to reach as many people as possible. If a company pays for regular weather updates though they will receive a specialist notification of the weather risk by phone or email so they can prepare or protect their business accordingly.
