Maraging Steel

Maraging steel is an iron alloy known for being vastly strong and tough without losing malleability.  It is a special class of low carbon ultra-high strength steel but it draws its strength from precipitation of inter-metallic compounds rather than carbon.

Due to the low carbon content maraging steel has good machinability and weldability, making it ideal for shaping and use in important applications like the construction of rockets and missiles.  The high alloy content makes the steel incredibly tough but it can be further hardened through nitridisation, where nitrogen is introduced to its surface.

Maraging steel has other properties considered to be extremely useful, like being fairly corrosion resistant.  To further improve protection from corrosion the surface can be coated with cadmium plating though.  Maraging steel clearly has many advantages and is therefore used in a wide range of applications including in the manufacture of engine components, in the sport of fencing and to make bicycle frames and golf clubs.
