Fluroescent Lighting
Fluorescent lighting is a form of illumination that uses electricity to excite mercury vapour, which produces ultra-violet light that causes a phosphor to fluoresce, thus producing visible light. It is generally a more expensive form of lighting to purchase but this is offset by low energy costs.
Until recently fluorescent lighting was typically found in commercial or institutional premises, as it is a fairly harsh form of lighting. However it is now found in a wide number of homes too with people choosing energy efficiency over aesthetics. The kitchen is a popular choice for fluorescent lighting over other rooms where ‘mood lighting’ is perhaps more important, as it is a well used room that requires good lighting to perform its functions anyway.
