Voice recognition software for the deaf and hard of hearing is an alternative to actual interpreters, who although skilled and very helpful can be costly.  Voice recognition for the deaf is specially developed software that converts speech to text and video sign language.

Voice recognition software has been shown to be useful in a number of situations and environments, including in education, the workplace and public access venues.  However there are still many improvements needed to the technology, as it consists simply of algorithms and can’t show meaning the way that interpreters can.

Voice recognition for the deaf can also be unreliable in noisy environments, as it will pick up on many sounds that it cannot report coherently.  However, it doesn’t draw attention to the person’s disability like a sign language interpreter might and could still be a worthwhile investment for some.
