Verbatim Reporting

Verbatim reporting is another term used for Palantype reporting, speech to text reporting and stenography. A verbatim reporter is someone who translates speech into text that appears on a screen for a deaf or hard of hearing person to read.

These verbatim reporters are often used in courts or for other important services where it is crucial that the deaf or hard of hearing person understands all the proceedings.

There are two systems that can be used for verbatim reporting, palantype machines or stenograph machines.  These two machines have the same use and purpose but have different layouts on the keyboard.

Successful verbatim reporters should be able to type up to 230 words per minute in order to keep up with speakers. These words are producing by typing verbatim chords in replacement of words on to a shorthand keyboard, enabling the reporter to produce words in tandem with the speaker. This allows the deaf or hard of hearing person to understand what is being spoken at that time.
