Transcription
The deaf and hard of hearing often feel excluded from society and isolated during group activities. Dedicated individuals trained in computer aided transcription endeavour to reduce the impact of their disability on leading a ‘normal’ life.
Palantype and stenography machines are specially designed for transcription during events such as meetings, conventions and seminars. Speech to text reporters use these specially adapted computers to type in short hand simultaneously with the speaker. The computer then automatically translates the short hand back to full English and projects it on to a screen to be read by the hearing impaired.
Transcription greatly improves communication for deaf people, helping them to feel included and as able as those with unaffected hearing. As well as assisting the hearing impaired, computer aided transcription is also used in court to take note of everything said for future records.
