Communication Support
Communication support to improve the lives of the deaf can come in many forms. Individuals specially trained in the art of palantype or stenography work to reduce stress in places like conferences, meetings and seminars by typing simultaneously with the speaker. The short hand they type in is then automatically converted back to full English by a computer and projected for the deaf to read.
Alternatively communication support can come in the form of a translator who is fluent in sign language. This type of support is more suitable for conversations in small groups although can often be seen on TV where a figure in the corner follows and translates the conversation on screen.
There are too many types of communication support to name but each form is invaluable in helping the deaf and hard of hearing to feel more integrated into society and social events. If you feel passionately about helping the hearing impaired then take a look at the websites of various charities and see whether you can offer communication support or a contribution of some kind to improve their quality of life.
