CACDP

The CACDP is the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People. It was founded in 1982 and currently has 26 full-time staff, 12 part-time staff and over 100 volunteers. The CACDP is the official body for Speech to text reporters and as such is a registered charity that aims to raise the standards of communication between people with functional hearing and the deaf.

The CACDP provides nationally recognised qualifications in sign language and other communication methods. They are one of the most widely recognised charities for supporting the deaf and has a long standing reputation for its intense work to improve the standards of living for the deaf.

The CACDP helps to train STTR’s (Speech-to-text-reporters). These reporters are trained to type exactly what someone says using the phonetic alphabet into a specially adapted keyboard.  The adapted keys are processed through a computer system to create the full word in the English language, which then appears on a screen for the deaf  and hard of hearing to read. In such a way the CACDP dramatically improves the quality of life and communication in situations such as meetings, courtroom appearances and seminars.
