Barcode readers and scanners are the most widely used types of barcode hardware device and are most often used in a supermarket. In-built barcode scanners can be found at the tills whilst staff may walk around with portable barcode readers. Both types of barcode hardware device do the same job -recalling information about the product scanned. Barcode hardware devices have had a significant impact on the retail industry, as their use of computing and speed have both been improved by the barcode.

Barcode Hardware Devices are also available with USB connectors, meaning they can be used with any computer, provided the correct driver is installed. Applications designed specifically for retail can be installed on a computer and used with a barcode hardware device.
