Barcode Consumables
Barcoding equipment is heavily used in the process of stock taking nowadays. Products are scanned on a daily basis to keep the main database up-to-date on the amount of produce in stock so replacement supplies can be ordered as part of a JIT system.
One use of barcode scanning in stock management is to register consumable items, namely the expired produce that is no longer fit for selling. Supermarkets sell thousands of different products, which they must keep track of to avoid customer complaints or worse, disciplinary action.
Consumable and perishable items such as the fresh meat, fish and counter products must be monitored particularly closely. Fresh consumables can be extremely hazardous to the health of an individual if consumed when they are out of date. Barcoding systems aid staff in keeping track of goods about to go out of date and ordering replacement stock in time.
